“Ness. Nessie. Mrs. Black,” Jacob whispered. I stirred and smiled groggily, knowing what Jake wanted. I rolled over and looked into his soft eyes. They spoke plainly of his seductive plan.

“Good morning love,” I said as I stretched and wrapped my arms around his neck. He began kissing me and I pulled away with a frozen smile. I put my hand to his flawless face showing him a picture of my father reading his thoughts from the room down the hall. It was at times like this that I hated the omniscience of my father.

“Please, Bella and Edward are probably doing the same thing.” Jacob laughed, “If you are worried Ness, then speak and think in Quileute.” I laughed in agreement and adjusted my thoughts accordingly. I was thankful that when Jacob and I were young we had discovered a way of keeping our intimate life private. I had forgotten how to be discreet since we had moved into the home my late Grandfather Charlie had left to us when he died of natural causes almost fifty years ago. Quileute was one of the few languages that we knew my dad would never get the chance to exercise, and there were so few books available, the temptation to track one down probably wouldn’t be strong enough to offset his respect for our privacy. Jacob continued smiling while my thought process came full circle. It was so hard to resist Jacob with his innocent warm eyes; it was like looking at a puppy begging for something. Aggh!

“Haven’t you had enough of me after two children and a century of my plain body,” I asked?

“Never, my beautiful!” He bashfully caressed my warm cheek and then began tracing the contour of the one shoulder that was not covered by my satin lingerie. He then proceeded to roll his finger around a lock of my long brown hair. He looked up again into my warm brown eyes.

“Don’t you think this place is romantic Ness?” he questioned while resting his temple against his fist. Mom and Dad did have a knack for making this specific holiday a special one. Leasing a vineyard estate in Austria was certainly lavish, but I never would have expected less from my parents.

“It’s very beautiful!” I nestled myself into the satin bed linens.

“Then it suits you.”

“You suit me Jacob, you were a wolf when I married you, and you’re still an animal,” I said smiling. Jake snarled and embraced me with his thick biceps, kissing me eagerly as I relieved him of his suspense.

Dad was playing the piano when Jacob and I came down the stairs to the first floor. Rose and Emmett were supposed to arrive this morning and I was very excited to be able to spend time with them. I hope that their anniversary trip to Esme Isle was enjoyable. I let go of Jake’s hand and circled the white grand piano. Sitting down on the piano bench I rested my head on father’s shoulder. This is the way we always were when I was young, but that seems so long ago. Since then Jacob and I had married and moved into the old cottage, had children of our own, and even raised them to adulthood. Our parents had changed too. Billy was gone now, and my parents had been dedicating significant time to my father’s musical career over the last many years. We were actually in Vienna because Dad’s latest composition had been performed at the famous Berg Theater only two nights ago. I wonder how that went?

Dad looked at me, “The performance was nice. I only wish we’d had a better harpist.”

“I’m sure it was beautiful, Dad. Sorry we couldn’t be there. I was serving as translator for a humanitarian aid project in Africa, and I just couldn’t make it back in time. Even if I had, Jacob still needed to be at the annual Black Corp. release show. He is never happy with the way anyone else demonstrates his construction equipment.”

“How did the release show go?”

“Good, he signed several new contracts.” I looked over at Jacob standing by a tall window admiring the acres of vines that striped the hills. He looked at us and smiled before returning to his thoughts.

“Do you like the estate Sweetheart?”

“Yes Dad! Very luxurious! You know, Jake and I might return to Forks feeling like our humble living there isn’t enough.”

“Impossible, you’re a minimalist like Bella, but at Christmas we must make sure we can provide accommodations for the entire family.” I swallowed hard, wishing all of us could be here and was forced to remember the day my twin sons arrived.

Cousins Elazar and Carmen were visiting from Alaska. “Dad seems to think we are having twins Carmen! He says they converse with one another when he reads their th…... Oouch!” I began experiencing labor pains. Jacob quickly carried me upstairs to the room where I was born at Grandpa Cullen’s Home. We had known that pregnancy would end quickly although I was pregnant only five months.

When Grandpa was ready to do the last cut on the C-section, Jacob phased and tore through my amniotic sack with his wolf claws. Mom held my hand through all of it. My first baby was delivered and Mom told me, “It’s a Boy!” She held him while I focused on delivering the second child. When the child finally came mother announced, “It’s another boy!”

Grandpa Carlisle held my second son in his arms. “He is your likeness Jacob.”

“Nesse look!” I looked over, wanting so badly to hold my babies, but I had been warned the little ones could be venomous. I observed that both babies were very pale skinned.

“I always thought Jacob’s children would have his darker skin.” I said almost to myself.

“Their vampire genes will be dominant in this generation, ” Carlisle told us. Jacob snarled in response and then laughed.

Since the younger child had Jacob’s features, I suggested, “Jake, we should name him William after Billy.”

My mom held my eldest son while I stroked his hand. “You know Ness, I have seen this child before!” she said.

“What do you mean, Mom?” I asked as she played with his bronze hair.

“I saw him in a dream, years ago, about the time I got pregnant with you. His name was E.J.”

The baby looked just like my dad, with green eyes. “Jake did you hear what mom just said?”

“Yeah! Bells, does E.J. stand for anything?” Jake asked.

My mother nodded, “Edward Jacob.” A name was never discussed after that. We knew that he would always be E.J. to us.

Dad visited me after the delivery. “Elazar has just read the boys’ talents. He says E.J. is a mind reader like me! He has one greater limitation though. He must look at others directly to read their thoughts. Will’s gift is called ‘White Cloud’. He has the ability to cloud a person’s memory. Elazar calls it white cloud because you must obtain consent to cloud memory. Dark Cloud’s have the ability to remove memory even if unwilled.” Dad paused for a moment before adding, “They are both very handsome. Congratulations!”

Will and E.J. were a handful at that age. I was a first time mother with two venomous newborns; luckily I had a support system, which included the most
maternal of all vampires: Aunt Rosalie, Grandma Bella, Grandma Esme and myself. Rose was feisty enough no one ever interfered with her desires to help, so she probably spent more time with Will and E.J. than anyone but Jacob and me.

I thought of my children as they were now. Will was in England with Grandpa Carlisle at the moment beginning a new psychology practice. I was expecting them to arrive before too long. That thought raised my spirits significantly, but still I wanted to see my E.J. Six years was too long to be without my son. All Jacob and I knew was that after a year and a half at Harvard University he disappeared overnight, telling Will that he had to go out and discover whom he was. We hadn’t heard anything from him since.

I put on a forced smile and began plunking out a piece on the piano. When I was a child, Dad always called this Bella’s lullaby, but essentially I adopted it. I felt a cold hand nudge my shoulder. Immediately my emotional turmoil decreased. I turned to notice my Uncle Jasper.

“Hey Jasper, how was your flight?” I questioned.

“It was good, but challenging being in the midst of humans.”

“Is that why you and Alice disappeared to go hunt right after you got here?”

“Yeah. I have to say, Edward, this place is wonderful for our venomous family. Almost as convenient as our land in Forks.” He slapped Edward’s back. Dad simply smiled in response.

“Is Alice still adorning herself?” I asked.

“You guessed it.” He smiled.

“I’m actually right here Jasper,” Alice chimed as she sashayed down the marble staircase to give me a kiss on the cheek.

I continued playing the piano and asked, “So where is Mom?”

“She had to pick up Rosalie and Emmett at the airport.” Dad answered.

Jasper and Jacob were talking at the tall windows and I joined them. “You up for playing some ball Nessie?” Jasper asked.

“Maybe later, I need to go hunt.” I asked Dad inaudibly if he would like to go with me, as Jacob wanted to eat civilized food.

Dad looked at me over the piano and nodded and then said to Alice, “Nessie and I have a date at the moment.”

“Enjoy!” Alice responded happily prancing over to Jacob and Jasper.

Dad and I exited the heavily carved, pastel door. As we stepped out onto the terrace, I could see the skyline of Vienna in the distance. “The forest borders the north side of the vineyard. Come, I’ll show you.” Dad began running and I followed.

Dad and I walked back from hunting and talked. Just before we opened the château’s door, dad hugged me and looked me straight in the eye. “Nessie, we have a surprise for you and Jacob. Be prepared for something bittersweet, okay?”

“Okay…”

He opened the carved door from which we had exited earlier. I entered and heard a slew of voices. I noticed Jacob’s eyes were saturated. He was hugging Emmett and Rose who had just arrived. He immediately noticed my entrance and gestured toward the stairs. About halfway up the stairway stood E.J. with my mother. I quickly ascended the stairs stopping just before my son. I motioned for him to come to me and noticed his green eyes were welling up too. I just held him.

He looked at me and held my face in his hands, “Mom I am so sorry for causing you pain!”

I couldn’t speak; tears just kept falling. I touched his face and used my gift to say that I had wished for him just before hunting. I looked up at my mother her hands extended. I grabbed them. “Did you arrange this Mom?”

“We all did,” she responded as she looked at Jacob.

The door then opened again and more tears fell as Esme, Carlisle, Will, and Leah all entered the Chateau. E.J. put his arm around my neck as we made our way down the stairs. I could tell Will was shocked and incredibly happy to see his twin brother. They hugged each other for a long moment before E.J. finally broke the embrace, holding Will at shoulders length. “You came bearing good news little brother!”

My sons were both smiling before Will grabbed Leah’s hand ready to announce something. Everyone was in a circle around the marble that Leah and Will stood on. “What is it Will? Leah?” I asked. Leah was wearing a most radiant smile.

“Well Leah quit her wolf two years ago and it appears that she can now get pregnant …”, Will was cut off by sudden cheering. Rose was jumping up and down in her attractive heels, clapping. I ran to Leah and held her while giving my congratulations. Jacob, Will, Emmett, and E.J. began a wrestling match raving about the new little wolf-to-be. Alice envisioned the baby shower. Carlisle and Esme were beaming as well knowing they would be third Great Grandparents. The hum of celebration lasted throughout the morning hours.

Later that day, after everyone had been given a chance to settle in, my father called for an unexpected family meeting. “Edward can you please explain what this is all about?” Carlisle inquired knowing that Dad’s meeting had caused a stir of confusion.

“All of you will be happy I did not postpone this news.” He glanced over to all of us and then to E.J.

E.J. sat there with his head down for a long moment, “I wish I came with tidings as joyous as Will’s, but instead I come with a confession. I have been working for the Volturi for the last several years.” The tension level increased significantly before Jasper calmed the room.

Jacob leaned forward running his hand through his hair. “Have you come to your senses then?”

“Dad, I knew I needed to be there before I even got involved with the Volturi. You might find this bizarre, but I had a vision that convinced me to go there and offer my … help. For a time they trusted me, but they are hiding much now.”

“Why?” Jasper inquired.

“I now believe that I was enlisted to make it appear unlikely that they were planning anything against you, but it appears they needed me gone to make final preparations for an attack. In an attempt to keep me from reading their minds Aro and Caius sent me to Estonia and there I chanced upon a couple with interesting abilities. They are humans known as ‘Black Oracles’ — heavily into witchcraft. Their minds revealed that they had recently been recruited by the Volturi to join in a war.”

“Do the ‘masters’ know that you know this?” Esme Inquired.

Edward responded when E.J. turned to look at him. “They do not. Bella and I found out E.J. was working with the Voltouri about a year ago on a trip to Italy. I discerned then that the ‘masters’ had full faith in E.J.’s loyalty to the Vultori. E.J. told me then of his dream and that he was there as a mediator for our family.”

I gasped for air. Jacob’s eyes met mine and hurt filled our gaze. They had known for a year where E.J. was without telling us? Dad looked at me regretfully.

“Dad, Mom, I asked Grandpa and Grandma not to reveal my whereabouts to you.”
Dad looked at Alice while reading her mind.

“E.J. you are a big reason I did not see this coming. You clouded my visions by working among Aro Marcus, and Caius.” Alice complained.

“Probably, but this will only be the first of many challenges Alice. I am convinced that they are conspiring against us. They know our coven’s power exceeds theirs. This is a great humiliation so they want an unpredicted war.”

"E.J. has done a great service to our family Alice,” Carlisle defended.

“Indeed,” said Alice. “They will be here, in Vienna, before the Christmas lights are gone… we will need the wolves… the witches number… thirty or forty.”

Leah turned to Jacob, “Can you summon the wolves here Jake?”

“Yes, but without me in Forks Seth must prepare them.”

“Carlisle, what do you think?” Edward asked.

“Forks is our battle ground, and seems safer, but I agree Austria is more central for our allies.”

Alice interjected, “There is no time for travel to Forks. We have… two weeks at most to gather everyone. We must find reinforcements. Now!”

“Jake and I can pay a visit to Zafrina and the Amazons, but E.J. will have to come with us. I am not letting him out of my sight!” I said.

“I’m game! Rose and I will find the Nomads,” Emmett said.

“I’m in, but Leah’s out. I’ll go to the Irish coven.” Leah nodded in agreement with Will.

“I can at least go to Forks and let Seth know to prepare the wolves,” Leah offered.

Dad and Mom grasped hands and looked at each other, “We’ll go to Egypt!”

“My visions show me staying here,” Alice said.

“I’ll go to Brazil to find Nahuel and his Aunt Huilen,” Jasper offered.

“Esme and I will call the Denali’s and go to Romania,” Carlisle responded.

There was a lot of traffic through the door in the next hour. E.J. stood next to me, his arm around my waist, as Jake held my hand. Mom looked at me with empathetic eyes and then stroked my face. “Renesame… E.J. can’t go with you and Jake.”

“What!” I reacted, but then realized, “You’re shielding him from the Vultoris’ trackers, aren’t you?” Mom nodded. I began getting emotional and then turned to Jacob and E.J. burying my face in their shoulders. “I’m sorry. I just need a minute,” I said as I hugged my son and prepared to say goodbye.

“Wait! Edward, couldn’t you and Jacob go to Egypt? That way Nessie and I can stay with E.J.?” Bella suggested.

“I suppose, but being without you and Nesse never sits well with Jake and I.”

“Please?” Mom pleaded.

“Fine!” He said, mocking my mother’s favorite word. Dad kissed her.

Jake lifted my face and wiped away my tears. Nodding, he indicated that he was okay with the arrangement. Then he kissed me. He kissed the top of E.J.’s head and we all embraced.

Dad kissed my forehead, “Be safe!”

“Love you…forever!” Mom responded.

Alice stayed alone on the terrace, waving goodbye, until our luxury cars faded into landscape.
